The new dating guru: ChatGPT
49% of Gen Z has used AI for dating. Here's what they're asking it.
Gen Z’s dating habits are unique. Since the oldest Gen Zers hit middle school, there’s been intrigue over how the first digitally native generation navigates romance — both on and offline. From Snapchat streaks to sending memes via DMs and relationship hard launches on Instagram, the digital existence of Gen Z has changed the dating game entirely, and there are so many quirks and habits about how Gen Z couples up that are completely unprecedented in the age of social media. That all compounds with the rise of AI.
Data from a 2025 Match survey shows that 49% of Gen Z has used AI for dating, which means Gen Z is using AI for dating more than any other generation. That’s not unexpected, given young people’s willingness to experiment with new technologies. But what’s more striking, is how and why Gen Z is using AI for dating.
Gen Z’s evolving relationship with AI use was a core theme of The Up and Up’s ‘Fall Semester Forecast’ Reality Check with members of our Gen Z community. Two questions we asked revealed a lot about how AI is influencing Gen Z’s romantic relationships:
What’s the most personal thing you’ve asked AI?
Have you used AI for dating advice? If so, what did you ask it?
For Gen Z, dating is already complicated. The youth gender gap is more pronounced than ever before and men and women have very different (often opposing) views of life goals and values. AI chatbots could be an intermediary to help diffuse confusion and conflict between Gen Z daters. But it could also up the ante by exacerbating their differences and further drive a wedge between them. The jury’s still out.
